Bumthang at a Glance

Bumthang Dzongkhag is located in the Northern part of the country bordered by Lhuntse Dzongkhag in the East, Trongsa and Wangdue Phodrang Dzongkhag to the West, Zhemgang Dzongkhag to the South and the Tibet Autonomous region of China to the North. It has an approximate area of 2708.46 sq.km with an elevations ranging from 2400 to 6000m above sea level. Approximately 59.3% of its total land area is under forest cover. It is administratively supported by four Gewogs namly Chhoekhor, Chumey, Tang and Ura. It has 1490 households and 101 villages. The total population of the Dzongkhag is 16116 out of which 11913 live in the rural area (PHCB, 2005). A favorable terrain coupled with excellent motor road access has brought about great socio-economic benefits to the people of Bumthang. It experiences cold climatic conditions with warm summer and cold winters. Income from potato, livestock farms and the ever increasing tourists are gradually changing the economic status of the people of Bumthang. Recent legalization of sale of cordyceps has further added to rural income. Sale of Masutake and Medicinal plants have also further enhanced purchasing power of people of upper Chhoekhor and Ura Geogs. Further, economic growth is expected once the Dzongkhag is connected to the Kurichu Hydro power grid.
